Challenger Anatoly Karpov was on the verge of winning it, when he took game 23, but was foiled by World Champion Garry Kasparov in the very last game. History only remembers the winners, but as Dennis Monokroussos shows inKarpov and Kasparov met again in 1986, 1987, and 1990 with Kasparoiv winning by a narrow margin each time. In 1993 Karpov regained the world title after Kasparov refused to play to FIDE conditions, defending it in 1996 and 1998.
