Lion Air Flight 610 ( JT610/LNI610) was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from SoekarnoâHatta International Airport, Jakarta, to Depati Amir Airport, Pangkal Pinang, in Indonesia. On 29 October 2018, the Boeing 737 MAX operating the route crashed into the Java Sea 13 minutes after takeoff, killing all 189 passengers and crew. The Max, the latest generation of Boeingâs flagship 737 aircraft family, was banned from flying globally in March 2019 after two fatal crashes in which 346 people were killed. The 737 Max crashes in Indonesia in 2018 and Ethiopia in 2019 killed all passengers and crew on board, triggered a slew of investigations and cost Boeing about US$20 billion ($27.3 billion).
