One might say, just play with no aim assist all the time to get used to one setting, but doing so immediately puts you at a disadvantage when every other controller player has it.

Controller players considered it fine and keyboard and mouse users did not consider it overpowered. However, Chapter 3 has changed many things, including this mechanic.
